1. Cathedral de Notre-Dame

Notre Dame Cathedral is at the heart of France, both geographically and spiritually.

It stands majestically on the Ile de la Cite, in theheart of the city. After the first stone was laid in1163, it took 170 years to complete. Built on thesite of a Roman temple, the cathedral is amasterpiece of Gothic architecture. When it wascompleted, in about 1330, it was 430 ft. long andfeatured flying buttresses, a large transept, adeep choir, and 228 ft. high towers.

2. Sacre-Coeur

One of the most photographed images of thecity, the spectacular white outline of Sacre-Coeur(Sacred Heart) watches over Paris from itshighest point. It was built as a memorial to the58,000 French soldiers killed during the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71) and took 46 years tobuild, finally completed in 1923 at a cost of 40 million francs (6 million euros). Priests still prayfor the souls of the dead here 24 hours a day. Although the interior is less impressive than manyother churches in the city, people flock here forpanoramic views - at sunset, in particular, thereare few sights in Paris more memorable.

3. Arc de Triomphe

The best day to visit the world’s most familiararch is 2 December, the date that marksNapoleon’s victory at the Battle of Austerlitz in1805, when the sun, setting behind the Champs-Elysees and the Arc de Triomphe, creates aspectacular halo around the building. Work beganon the 50 metre arch in 1806 but was nevercompleted until 1836, due to Napoleon’s fall frompower. Today the arch is a focal point fornumerous public events. Standing 164 ft. high, thearch is now the customary starting point forvictory celebrations and parades.

5. Chateau du Versailles

The Palace of Versailles, whose origins date backto the seventeenth century, was successively ahunting lodge, a seat of power and, from thenineteenth century, a museum. With the gardensand the Palaces of Trianon, the park of theChâteau de Versailles spreads over 800 hectares. The Hall of Mirrors, the most famous room in thePalace, was where the Treaty of Versailles wassigned on 28 June 1919, ending the First WorldWar. Since then, presidents of the Republic havecontinued to receive official guests here.
