1. 2 PhD positions in Interfacial Imaging of Water: New Light on Cellular Hydration

Two PhD student positions are avAIlable at the Laboratory for fundamental BioPhotonics (LBP) at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland.

Water is the liquid of life. It is intimately linked to our well-being. Without water, cell membranes cannot function. Charges and charged groups cannot be dissolved, self-assembly cannot occur, and proteins cannot fold. That water is intimately linked with life, we experience time and again when we quench our thirst, but how does this link work?
Osmosis is the flow of water across a (cell) membrane that separates two aqueous solutions with different concentrations of a solutes. Regulating osmotic pressure is a key survival strategy of cells and plays an important role in the functioning of every organism. How osmotic pressure and cell membrane tension are regulated on the molecular level is not known. It is the aim of the ERC Synergy Grant R2 tension, a collaboration between EPFL (Prof. S. Roke) and the University of Geneva (Prof. A. Roux) to work this out.

The Project at EPFL

Nonlinear optical imaging and new ultrafast spectroscopic techniques have recently been developed in the Roke lab and used to image in real time interfacial water and electrostatic potentials on membrane interfaces of model membranes and in living cells.
In the current project: two new microscopes are to be constructed that will allow us to (1) image interfacial water in real time as well as the electrostatic field lines on the interface, and (2) image in real time membrane tension in vitro and in living systems. We will also provide a molecular ruler that links molecular conformation of lipids to mechanical forces. The new technology will first be applied in a controlled manner to in-vitro assays, after which measurements on living cells will be performed.

The EPFL Candidate

2. PhD thesis position on SOFC micro-gasturbine hybrid system

Mission / Topic

Conduct a 4 yr PhD thesis on the physical realization of a hybrid system between a 8 kWe Solid Oxide Fuel Cell and a 1-2 kWe micro gas turbine using post combustion of the SOFC exhaust gas. The system will include CO2 separation and therefore be virtually emission-free. The project is a close collaboration between 2 EPFL Laboratories: one responsible for the high speed micro-turbomachinery, one for the SOFC (Group of Energy Materials, EPFL-GEM). This thesis is inscribed in the latter. The 8 kWe SOFC stack is supplied by an industry partner.

Tasks and responsibilities

The planned R&D on the SOFC part consists of: (1) finetuning the existing layout of a theoretically optimized hybrid system to design from this physically the key hardware balance-of-plant components (heat exchangers, combustor); (2) using a dynamic model to investigate the thermal behavior of these components (interactions and transients) including the SOFC stack; (3) designing and realizing in detail the balance-of-plant components (heat exchangers, combustor; using CFD) in connection with market suppliers; (4) experimentally investigating short SOFC stacks in operating conditions representative of the hybrid mode operation range.

Profile

Mechanical engineer (or very similar profile), ideally with prior knowledge in the field, though not mandatory. Interest and ability in both experimental and theoretical aspects (about 50:50 of effort investment in the project), in the topics of mechanical design, heat exchange, instrumentation, combustion, modeling (CFD, process, components), programming, post-test analysis.

Environment

A stimulating environment in an international team (9 nationalities) of currently 6 PhD students, 5 scientists and 4 engineers from a pluridisciplinary background covering mechanical, (electro)chemical and materials engineering. Our laboratory is equipped for diagnostics of SOFC stacks and components and counts with access to a suite of in house common facilities as well as next door facilities within the common campus of Energypolis Sion between EPFL-Valais/Wallis and the neighboring University of Applied Sciences. Sion is a lively animated town, one of the sunniest locations in the country, and a great place for real life-work balance with plenty of outdoor activities all year round. The lab is a 2 minute walk from the Sion central railway station.

3. PhD Position on energy transition in socio-technical systems

We are offering a 100% PhD researcher position for 4 years on energy transition in socio-technical systems at the Laboratory for Human-Environment Relations in Urban Systems (HERUS), School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering (ENAC), at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne, Switzerland.
The research focus of HERUS is on transitions of urban systems towards sustainability, with energy as one of our key areas of research. HERUS is an interdisciplinary team, consisting of social and natural scientists. We combine social science methods with material and energy flow models, using Agent-Based-Modelling, System Dynamics and data science methods.
The research of the PhD student will focus on the energy transition in socio-technical systems examining the relationship between energy systems and society. (S)he will investigate the interplay between energy technologies and resources on one side, and social processes (individual behaviour, decision-making processes, economic and political agency) on the other, and combining qualitative and quantitative approaches.

The Machine Learning and Information Processing group at TUM works in the intersection of machine learning and signal/information processing with a current focus on deep networks for solving imaging problems, learning robust models from few and noisy samples, and DNA data storage. We are looking for a PhD student in the area in the area of machine learning, and a PhD student in the area of information theory for DNA data storage.

5. PhD position CRC1550 “Molecular Circuits of Heart Disease”

searched for the the newly formed CRC1550 “Molecular Circuits of Heart Disease”. It is a tandem project between the Stem cell lab of Timon Seeger and the Georg Stoecklin Lab, Division of Biochemistry, Mannheim Institute for Innate Immunoscience, resulting in a close exchange, and joined meetings will be held on a regular basis.   
The project focusses of RNA decay mechanisms in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) caused by premature termination codon mutations (PTC) in Myosin binding protin-C3 (MYBPC3) aiming at understanding and targeting the underlying dysregulations for translational strategies. You will be predominantly working with already established induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) lines analyzing iPSC derived cell types (cardiomyocytes and fibroblasts) towards molecular dysregulations on RNA control levels, i.e. nonsense-mediated RNA decay. You will further perform functional evaluation of interfering strategies. Finally, developed hypothesis will be translated into existing mouse models.      Candidates with a strong interest and ideally a background in cardiovascular sciences are highly encouraged to apply. We expect an excellent MSc related to cardiac sciences, RNA metabolism, or cell model systems to join as a PhD student. Experience with iPSCs and bioengineering is a strong plus
